There are several options.
Chapter 13, the debt consolidation provisions of the Bankruptcy Code, often allow you to save houses from foreclosure, pay back taxes without harassment, and may allow you to reduce the outstanding payments for your car, furniture, or other secured debt.
Chapter 7, or straight bankruptcy, often allows you to wipe out debt. Many people have misconceptions regarding the items you might lose in a Chapter 7. Often, clients file Chapter 7 without losing property at all.
Chapter 11 can be used by individuals with a large amount of debt, but usually corporations use those provisions to reorganize.
